• I love sunflowers. Who doesn't? Hard not to be attracted to such a colorful, wild, exuberant plants! But that alone makes them a difficult subject for painting....its too easy to make a "happy painting" when they are the subject.  I love them best, however, when their big heads become too heavy to hold up and they begin to bow back down to the earth from which they sprang.  This image has a poignancy for me about the span of life.

  • These two pieces are very indicative of how I work. I was needing to flesh out a piece I wanted to put in the Elder Series:Simple Things body of work. In that respect, I may do more than sketch to try out some design and color ideas. So these are "studies" although they are also finished works in their own right.

If you'd like to see the final piece from these studies, it's in the series gallery; Title: Simple Things #3: In a Quaker Kitchen
